Beach Clean-up
Join RE Sources and the Surfrider Foundation for the annual 5th of July beach cleanup
It's that time of year again when the sun sparkles off the beauty of Bellingham Bay, and the lovely varicolored fireworks, cans, bottles and other assorted trash are just begging for a new home. This year we're collaborating on three clean-up sites. Come to meet new friends, look for cool plastic stuff, and have a great time!
In Bellingham from 9:30 am to noon: We'll meet at Marine Park in Fairhaven at 9:30 am. Lee First of RE Sources' North Sound Baykeeper team will be on hand with our cool new display on marine plastics. From Marine Park, one crew will clean southward around the point and back. A second crew will follow Eleanor Hines of Surfrider Foundation to Locust Beach, parking at the Bellingham Kiteboarding center and cleaning from there. Plan on pick-up activities to continue until noon.
Cherry Point from 10 am to noon: Join Matt Krogh of the North Sound Baykeeper team at the end of Gulf Rd (west on Main St. in Ferndale, continue onto Mountain View Rd., angle right on Rainbow Rd. [4.8 miles from the Nooksack bridge], swoop left onto Henry Johnson Rd. going west, turn left onto Gulf Rd. Park at pull-out by beach.)
What to bring: - Buckets with handles if you've got 'em. We'll consolidate into bags at the collection point. (Buckets are also better for sharp objects.) - Good gloves and shoes. Consider long pants, as collecting litter can lead to injuries. - Sun protection (hah!). How about "weather appropriate clothing?"
Special thanks to: - RDS in Ferndale for once again agreeing to accept litter from the beach cleanups! - City of Bellingham for loaning us litter grabbers Contacts: Matt (mattk@re-sources.org; 360-820-2938), Lee (leef@re-sources.org), Eleanor (eleanorehines@gmail.com, 215-287-0043)
