With the WTA Levy vote bearing down on us, we are going to make sure you are armed with a solid knowledge of the role of public transit, in the past and moving on into the future.

Membership meeting: Lobby Day & WTA Levy Endorsement

Our February membership meeting will be an opportunity to get up-to-date legislative reports, write letters and make calls on pressing issues in the Washington State Legislature, as they reach the half-way point in the 2010 session. 

Members will also consider whether to endorse the WTA Levy proposal on the ballot April 27th. Find more infomation on this ballot measure HERE.

PROGRAM: School Board Candidates who are seeking the Democratic Party endorsement: With the budget crunch, neighborhood schools and other issues, their comments will mean even more this year. Endorsement in these races will be considered in AUGUST. Also: possibly some resolutions on state party policies.

In accordance with our Endorsement Policy, the membership of the Whatcom Democrats will consider candidates for endorsement, at its June meeting. Members must attend to participate. The meeting is held at Norway Hall, 1419 N. Forest St, Bellingham, 7 - 9 pm.

Urban/Rural Growth Revisited

Whatcom 2031 was the topic at the 42nd Legislative District Democrats meeting on Saturday, March 14. Panelists Dave Pros, former County Planning Commission member, Ken Mann, County Planning Commission member, and Carl Weimer, County Councilman, discussed some of the issues concerning the process of developing a plan for 20-year growth. Among the issues facing the Commission are how realistic current population projections are, can growth be accommodated in the existing incorporated cities, and how growth in rural areas can be controlled to preserve farmland and open spaces.

The general membership meeting on March 11 hosted a panel of law enforcement officers to present “Near the Border: Homeland Security’s Approach to Enforcement in our Backyard and the Run up to the 2010 Olympics,” Representing some of the agencies that cooperate across jurisdictions were U.S. Border Patrol Chief John Bates, U.S. Customs & Border Protection (CBP) Acting Service Port Director Lynn Gardner, Branch Chief of Enforcement Operations Chris DeMello (both from Blaine), and Whatcom County Sheriff Bill Elfo.
